I’ve always loved fairy tales but never dug into their origins. One day, my nephew asks me why Rapunzel’s mom wanted those greens so bad. I’m stumped. Time to hunt down the original story.
First Step: Library Trip
Grabbed my old backpack and hit the downtown library. Found this dusty Brothers Grimm collection from 1978. It smelled like wet cardboard. Flipped through yellow pages until I found “Rapunzel”. The spine cracked loud enough to make people stare.
The WTF Moments
Started reading and wow. Disney left out some wild stuff:
Sat there staring at page 83 like my brain short-circuited.
Meaning Breakdown
Kept mulling over why this matters:
Made me realize why original fairy tales scared kids straight.
The Aftermath
Told my nephew the real story during bedtime. His eyes got huge at the baby-trading part. Now he calls lettuce “baby-stealer leaves”.
Honestly? The original hits different. Way darker but somehow more real. Next project – finding out if Snow White’s stepmom really danced in hot iron shoes.
