Aesop’s Fable: The Deer with One Eye

Once upon a time, in a quiet forest, a fawn was born. This fawn was different from the other fawns in that it had only one eye.At first, the other animals thought it was strange and often stared at it.

However, even though the fawn had one eye missing, it had a special ability – it could use that eye to see what was going on in the minds of the other animals.Slowly, it realized that not all animals that look kind are really kind inside; and not all animals that look mean are necessarily bad inside.

Some animals look beautiful, but they always bully others; some animals look scary, but their hearts are especially gentle and they are willing to help others. The little deer saw these secrets with his own eyes and began to realize one truth: whether a person is good or not cannot be judged only by his looks or appearance, but what is really important is what he thinks and does in his heart.

The deer began to tell the other animals about its discovery. It would say, “Actually, you are a bit selfish in your heart.”Or, “You’re really kind even though you’re not very talkative.”After the animals heard this, they slowly began to reflect on themselves and learn to care for others.

Aesop's Fable: The Deer with One Eye

Instead of feeling inferior because of its missing eye, the deer felt that this was its advantage. He used his ability to help everyone solve problems and became the “peacemaker” in the forest. When the animals quarreled with each other, the deer would appear and tell everyone what was really in their hearts, so that they could understand each other and stop fighting.

This story tells us an important truth: we can’t judge whether someone is a good person or a bad person just by what he looks like or how he dresses.Everyone has his or her own thoughts and feelings, and we can only really understand a person if we look at him or her with our heart.

At the same time, this story also reminds us to learn to tolerate and understand others.Maybe some people don’t look too pleasant, but they may be very warm inside. If we are willing to be a little more patient and understand others, the world will become a better place.

So, like that little deer, we should not be confused by superficial things and learn to see the world with our hearts and recognize the people around us.Maybe we don’t have those magical eyes, but we can do the same by listening, communicating and understanding.

Remember, true beauty is not in the face, but in the heart.
