Once upon a time, there was a little dog who was not happy in his life. His master was very mean to him, either beating or scolding him, and even not giving him food. The dog couldn’t stand this life and finally decided to leave this cruel home.
In the forest, the dog met its former best friend – a smart and enthusiastic little sparrow. When the sparrow saw the dog’s thin and weak appearance, his heart felt very bad, and he quickly asked, “How did you become like this? It looks like you haven’t eaten for days.” The little dog lowered his head and said that he had been hungry for days and could hardly hold on.
After hearing this, the sparrow flapped its wings and said, “Don’t worry, I’ll take you to find food, and when you’re full, we’ll always be together from now on, and no longer be bullied.”
After saying this, the sparrow took the dog to the back door of a bakery. There were some thrown away bread edges there, which were left over but looked fresh. The dog wolfed it down, and his stomach rumbled afterward.
Sparrow flew back to the back of the nearby butcher store, where there were also a number of freshly thrown out pieces of meat, and Sparrow gently patted the dog on the head, “Go on, you can have some of this meat too.” The dog was grateful and finally ate his fill, wagging his tail happily and saying to Sparrow, “Thank you, I’ve never eaten so well.”
After he had eaten and drunk his fill, the dog felt so relaxed that he lay down to rest in the shade of a tree in the forest, basking in the sunshine, and soon fell asleep. Sparrow stopped on a branch aside and looked at his sleeping friend, feeling contented and that he had done a wonderful thing.

Just then a large wagon loaded with wine came down the forest path. The coachman, whip in hand, drove his horse, not paying attention to the sleeping dog in front of him. The sparrow immediately flew down and stopped in front of the coachman, saying, “Please stop, my good friend is sleeping in front of me, can you go around? Otherwise he will be crushed to death.”
The cart driver glanced at the dog and said coldly, “I’m not blind, I see the dog. But he’s sleeping in the middle of the road, so is it my fault?” Sparrow said, “But this isn’t even a road, it’s a forest trail.” The coachman, however, returned without a care in the world, “Where my carriage goes, that’s the road.”
After saying that, he didn’t have any intention of slowing down, but instead continued to drive the horses. The carriage rolled over and the puppy died instantly under the wheels.
The sparrow watched its best friend being crushed to death by the carriage driver, and the whole bird exploded with anger. It flew to the cart driver and shouted angrily, “You will pay for what you did today!” The cart driver laughed disdainfully, “You’re just a little sparrow, not as big as my hand, what can you do to me?”
The sparrow didn’t say another word and flew to the back of the carriage. The driver continued to drive the carriage forward, and before long, he suddenly felt something was wrong. He turned around and saw that the barrel that had been filled with wine was now empty – the wine had all leaked out, and on closer inspection, there were several small holes in the barrel, all of which had been pecked by the sparrow.
The coachman was furious, picked up an axe and ran after the sparrow, shouting, “You nasty little thing, I’m going to chop you to death!” The sparrow flew so fast that the coachman couldn’t hit it with his axe and cut the rope holding the horse. The horse was startled and fled with the whole wagon at a gallop.
Seeing that the wine was gone, the horse ran away, and even the carriage was gone, the coachman was furious and red in the face, and continued to hold up his axe and chase after the sparrow. When he reached the river, the sparrow flew over the water, but the cart driver stepped on his foot and fell into the water.
Because he couldn’t swim, he struggled a few times before sinking to the bottom of the water and never came back up.
Moral of the story (rewritten and summarized)
This story actually tells more than a fairy tale, it is more like a symbol of reality. The dog ran away from his family because he was hurt by human beings. The sparrow, as a friend, not only helped him find food and warmth, but also firmly avenged the dog after he was killed. Though small and seemingly insignificant, the sparrow, through its wisdom and perseverance, makes that cruel carter be punished.
Sometimes, a seemingly small and weak life can exert amazing power. As long as it insists on justice, even if it faces a strong person, it can make the other party pay for its evil deeds.
This story tells us: don’t despise others, and don’t hurt them because they are weak, because you don’t know that behind them there may be a little sparrow who refuses to compromise and is willing to stand up for his friends.
