Grimm Fairy Tales: The Riddle

Grimm Fairy Tales: The Riddle

Once upon a time, there were three women who, for reasons unknown, were transformed into a white flower, a red flower, and a yellow flower. They were planted in a quiet field. By day, they were ordinary flowers, swaying gently in the breeze. But at night, one of them could return to human form and go home to reunite with her husband.

There was one rule: she must return to the field before dawn, transform back into a flower, and stand in her original spot without anyone noticing her absence.

She treasured these brief reunions. Each time she returned home, she would hold her husband tightly, sharing stories of her days in the field and listening to his tales of changes at home. How she longed to stay home forever! Yet she knew that if she failed to return on time, she might never regain her human form.

One day, she told her husband, “Tomorrow afternoon, come to this field and pluck me. Then I won’t have to turn back into a flower. I can stay with you forever.”

Her husband was overjoyed. “I will! I promise I’ll come,” he said. But all three flowers look exactly alike. How will I know which one is you?“

The wife thought for a moment and said, ”Don’t worry. I went home last night and didn’t spend the night in the field, so my petals won’t have dew on them. The other two flowers stayed out all night, so they’ll have dewdrops clinging to them in the morning. Just look for the one that’s dry, without any water droplets—that will be me.”

The next afternoon, the husband arrived early at the field. The sun shone on the three flowers, each swaying gently in the breeze. As he approached, he saw two blossoms glistening with tiny, sparkling droplets of water, like tears. Only one flower had petals that were dry, without a single drop.

His heart tightened. “Is that you?” he whispered softly. Then, with great care, he plucked that flower.

The moment he held it, the flower transformed into his wife. She smiled, her eyes shining. They embraced tightly, never to part again.

From then on, they returned home together, living peaceful days. In that field, only two flowers remained, swaying in the wind each night, waiting for their day to come.

The Truth Behind the Story

This tale is brief, yet it speaks not of magic, but of “difference” and “love.” Three flowers appeared identical, yet one was unique—she did not remain in the field at night, and thus bore no dew. This small distinction became the key to her recognition.

In truth, everyone carries their own unique “mark.” Like the dewless flower, her experiences made her distinct. Her husband recognized her not by color or shape, but because he knew her story—that she had returned home the night before.

This shows that true love is understanding. If you truly care for someone, you won’t just see their surface; you’ll remember what they’ve been through and know what makes them different.

What Lesson Does This Story Teach Us?

This story teaches us: To love someone is to recognize them in a crowd, even when they appear identical to others.

In life, many people may look alike, dress similarly, and speak in comparable ways. But those who truly understand you will notice details others miss—like the weariness in your eyes or your subtle speech habits.

At the same time, the story reminds us: Don’t overlook those small differences. It’s precisely these differences that make us who we are. Like that flower without dew, her “difference” isn’t a flaw—it’s proof she made it home, the very reason she was loved.

So wherever you are, whatever you do, as long as love resides in your heart, someone will recognize you, find you, and bring you home.
