Today we are going to tell an interesting Aesop’s fable called “The Rooster and the Fox.” Although this story is not long, it contains a very profound lesson. It teaches us that when faced with danger, strength alone is not enough; it is more important to think calmly and find a way to protect yourself.
Let’s begin the story!
In a quiet forest lived a hardworking rooster and a lazy big dog. Every morning, before dawn, the rooster would wake up early, fly to a tree, and crow “cock-a-doodle-doo” to wake everyone up.
When the animals heard the rooster’s crowing, they knew that a new day had begun. But there was one animal who particularly disliked getting up early, and that was the big dog. He would wait for the rooster to call him several times before he would open his eyes.
One day, the rooster said to the dog, “You always sleep in. How can this go on? You need to exercise more so that you can protect us all!”
The dog thought this made sense and started getting up early every morning to run and exercise. Before long, the dog became stronger and stronger, and even the wolves and foxes in the forest dared not approach him.
This made the rooster feel much safer. However, there was one fox who was not convinced. He thought to himself, “I am a fox. How can I not catch a little rooster?”
So the fox began to secretly follow the rooster and the dog, hoping to find a moment when they were apart so he could pounce.

The rooster senses danger and comes up with a clever plan
The rooster soon noticed the fox watching him and felt a little nervous. He hurried to find the dog to discuss a plan.
After listening, the dog said, “Don’t worry, I’ll protect you.”
The rooster nodded and said, “I have a plan. Tomorrow, you can hide by the river, and I’ll pretend to go there alone to pick grass seeds to lure the fox over. Then you can jump out and take care of him.”
The dog was a little worried and said, “Isn’t that too dangerous? What if the fox eats you on the way?”
The rooster smiled and said, “Don’t worry, I have it all figured out.”
The next day’s plan began
The next day, the rooster deliberately woke up later than usual. The other animals found this strange and asked him if he was sick and why he didn’t wake them up today.
The rooster said loudly, “Today I’m going to go alone to a small river far away to pick grass seeds. The road is a bit long, so I need to rest a little longer.”
The fox, hiding in the grass, heard this and was overjoyed. He thought to himself, “Great! The dog isn’t coming this time. Finally, I have a chance to eat some chicken!”
So the fox quietly followed the rooster, planning to catch him deep in the forest.
The rooster walked along singing, looking very happy, but he was actually very nervous inside. When he walked to a big tree, the fox suddenly jumped out from behind the tree with a smug smile on his face, ready to pounce on the rooster.
Unexpectedly, the rooster wasn’t afraid at all. Instead, he smiled and greeted the fox, “Hey, big brother fox, out for a walk so early?”
The fox was stunned. He had thought the rooster would run away in fear, but he was so calm. He began to suspect that there was a trap, so he asked tentatively, “Where are you going? Do you want me to accompany you?”
The rooster agreed readily, “Sure, there’s no one to talk to. Dog Brother slept in again and isn’t up yet.”
Hearing this, the fox breathed a sigh of relief and thought, “It seems that the dog really isn’t here.” So he let his guard down and walked with the rooster toward the river.
Along the way, the rooster chatted and laughed, looking very relaxed. The fox still felt a little uneasy, but he reassured himself, “Maybe this kid is just bold.”
The truth is revealed at the river
Soon, they arrived at the small river. There was no one around, and the fox felt that his chance had come. He grabbed the rooster’s wing and said fiercely, “Don’t waste my time! I’ve put up with you for long enough. Today, I’m going to eat you!”
Just then, the rooster suddenly laughed and shouted, “Big Dog!”
The fox sneered, “It’s no use shouting. That lazy dog is still sleeping!”
But no sooner had he finished speaking than a voice rang out from behind him, “Who said I’m still sleeping?”
The fox turned around and was startled to see the big dog standing behind him!
The fox turned to run, but it was too late. The dog lunged forward and pinned him to the ground. The fox never imagined that he had been tricked by a rooster.
In the end, the dog took the fox back to the forest, where he became everyone’s target of caution.
What does this story teach us?
Although this fable is simple, it conveys a very important lesson:
When faced with danger, don’t panic. Learn to think calmly. Only by keeping a clear head can you find a solution to the problem.
Just like the rooster in the story, he knew he couldn’t beat the fox, but he wasn’t afraid. Instead, he tried to get help from his friends and ultimately resolved the crisis.
At the same time, this story also teaches us:
- Friendship is important. The mutual trust and cooperation between the rooster and the dog allowed them to defeat their enemy.
- Don’t be clever on your own. The fox thought he was very clever, but in the end, his cleverness backfired.
- Bravery and wisdom are more useful than brute force. Sometimes, thinking is more effective than acting.
Summary:
If you are a parent and want to tell your child an interesting and educational story, try “The Rooster and the Fox.” Not only will it keep them entertained, but it will also help them learn how to respond calmly when faced with difficulties.
