This is a short story about a flower. It takes place in winter, when it is cold and windy, but the house is warm.At that time, the ground outside was covered with thick snow, and the sun in the sky looked so far away, as if it didn’t want to come out.
But under the ground, a flower was waking up quietly.
The name of this flower is “Summer Folly”.It is still hidden in the earth, covered with snow and ice.Although it had not yet bloomed, it had already imagined summer in its dreams.
One day, it rained from the sky.The rain slowly seeped into the snow and flowed deep into the earth, finally touching the roots of this flower. The raindrops told it, “There is a bright world up there, the sun is warm and the air is fresh.”
Shortly afterward, a thin ray of sunlight shone down through a crack in the snow and gently touched the flower’s roots. The flower felt that warmth and it couldn’t help but ask:
“Can you come in?”
The sunshine replied, “I’m not strong enough to open the door right now. When summer comes, I’ll be able to take you out.”
“And when will summer come?”The flower asked.
It repeated this question every day as soon as a little sunlight came in.But summer was still very early; the ground was still white with snow, and it would freeze at night.
The flower got a little anxious and said, “Why is summer so slow?I can’t wait!I want to stretch, I want to stand up, I want to look at the sun and say ‘hello’ to it!What fun that would be!”
So it began to burrow hard. Its outer skin had been softened by the water and gently caressed by the sun, so it finally pushed through the thin shell of ice.
Slowly, it emerged from the snow.A small light green bud grew on the green stem, and there were a few thin and long leaves next to it, as if to protect the bud.
By this time, the sun was getting stronger, and the flower finally saw the outside world.
“Welcome!”Every beam of sunlight said to it, “Welcome to this bright place!”
The sunlight gently kissed the flower, making it bloom more and more beautiful. Its petals were as white as snow, with faint streaks of green. It lifted its head with a special joy in its heart, feeling that it was the most beautiful flower in the world.

“What a lovely little flower!”Sunshine said, “You are the first flower, you are the only flower! You are our baby! You are telling us: summer is coming!”
The flower was so happy to hear these words. It felt that the whole world was singing to it, and the sunlight seemed to burrow into it and give it strength.
It stood there, and although it looked soft and easily broken, it was actually very spirited. It wore its little green dress and had summer on its mind.
But summer was still really far away. The snow is still on the ground and the wind is still cold.
The wind said, “You’ve come too early, it’s not the right time yet.You should wait a little longer, don’t rush out.”
It was really cold and the days went by with hardly any sunshine. For such a tiny flower, this weather was really hard. But it didn’t fall down because it believed that summer would surely come.
It gained strength from its happiness and courage from its expectation of the future. It firmly believed that one day the earth would turn green, the wind would be warm, and the sun would shine in every corner.
So it stayed standing, in its little white dress, on the snow.As the snowflakes fell on it layer by layer, as the cold wind blew across its face, it just lowered its head and didn’t give up.
“You’ll freeze!”The wind mocked it, “You’ll wither and be frozen! Why did you run out? You’re too stupid! The sunlight lied to you! You’re a ‘Summer Folly’!”
“Summer Folly!”A voice responded in the cold morning.
“Summer Folly!”A couple of children who ran out into the garden said excitedly.
“That’s a beautiful flower, it’s the first of the year!”
Hearing these words made the flower feel especially happy. These words shone into its heart like sunshine. It didn’t even notice that it had been picked and held carefully in the palm of its hand.
The children took it home and put it in a warm room.A little girl kissed it with her mouth and put it in a glass of water. The flowers thought they had arrived in summer.
This little girl had just finished her confirmation and she had a good friend, a boy who had also just finished his confirmation. She smiled and said, “He’s going to be my ‘summer obsession’.”
She pinned the flower to a piece of paper on which she had written a poem titled “Summer Swoon” and ended it with the same word.In the poem she wrote, “My little friend, be a winter dolt!”
The poem was written to the boy.The flower was put into an envelope and began its journey. It was stuffed into the pouch, squeezed and pressed, and it was not a comfortable process at all.But all journeys come to an end.
When the letter was opened, the boy read the poem and looked at the flower, and he smiled. He carefully tucked the flowers away in a drawer with the poem.It was a drawer full of letters, but not a single flower in it.And this flower was the first, the only one.
The flower lay in the drawer, thinking about these things, with a special contentment. It stayed like that for a summer, and a long winter, until it was taken out again.
This time, things weren’t quite the same. The boy didn’t look happy. As soon as he grabbed the piece of paper, he threw it aside, along with the poem, and the flower fell to the ground.
It had dried up and become flattened. It shouldn’t have been thrown on the ground, but it was a good result than being burned. Those poems and letters had been burned by the fire.
Why was that? There’s no particular reason really, it’s just that love has changed. The girl who wrote the letters, in June, fell in love with someone else.
The flower was lying on the floor with the sun shining on it.The maid who swept the floor found it, picked it up and stuck it in a book. The book was sitting on the table, left by someone else when they packed up.
And just like that, the flower is back in the world of poetry – this time poems printed in a book, not handwritten.Perhaps these poems were greater than the one before, or at least it cost quite a bit of money to buy the book.
Years passed and the book stood quietly on the shelf.Until one day, someone took it down and looked through it.
It was a great book, full of works by the Danish poet Ambrosius Stubb. He was a marvelous poet, but unfortunately no one appreciated him at the time and he was not rediscovered until many years later.
The person reading the book turned a page and suddenly said in amazement, “Oops, here’s a flower!A ‘Summer Folly’!How did it get here?”
He continued, “Poor Ambrosius Stubbs, he too was a ‘summer obsession’ like this flower. He appeared too soon to be understood and accepted. He was like a flower in a bottle, or a flower in verse. He was a laughing stock in everyone’s eyes, a fool in other people’s mouths. But he was the first truly talented Danish poet.”
“This little flower, you can leave it in the book as a bookmark. It makes sense to put it here.”
And so the “summer fool” went back into the book.It was happy and proud.Because this time it wasn’t just stuck in any book, but it was a bookmark in a book of beautiful poems. And the person who wrote these poems was also a “Summer Folly”.
The flower seemed to understand something. It knows that sometimes a person or a flower may not be understood and cherished if it appears too early. But they still hold on to their dreams and beliefs.
This is the story of “Summer Folly”.
