Interesting Chinese Folk Tale: Monkey catching the moon

Hello everyone, today I would like to share with you a very interesting traditional story called “The Monkeys Trying to Fetch the Moon.” This story is about several monkeys who saw the moon in a well and thought it had fallen into the water, so they worked together to try to fetch it.

Although this is just a fun little fairy tale, it contains many lessons that are worth thinking about. Let’s take a look at the story together!

Let the story begin!

Once upon a time, behind a small village there was a mountain. The mountain was covered with all kinds of flowers, trees, and strange-shaped rocks. Many small animals lived there, such as cute rabbits, clever foxes, and a group of mischievous monkeys.

One night, a bright and round moon hung in the sky. The monkeys were jumping and playing in the forest, having a great time.

Suddenly, a little monkey discovered an old well. It was curious, so it ran over and looked into the well. Oh no! There was a big moon in the well!

The little monkey was terrified and shouted loudly, “Oh no! The moon has fallen into the well!”

The other monkeys heard the cry and ran over. They also looked into the well and saw that there really was a moon in it!

“Oh my god, the moon has really fallen in!” cried a big monkey.

“We’re doomed! Without the moon, how will we see our way at night?” another monkey said worriedly.

Soon, all the monkeys gathered around and discussed what to do.

Monkey catching the moon

The monkeys came up with an idea

At this moment, the old monkey stepped forward and said, “We can’t let the moon stay at the bottom of the well. Everyone, think of a way to get it out!”

The little monkey looked at the tree next to him and had an idea. He said, “We can hang upside down from the tree like lanterns and reach down to grab the moon.”

Everyone thought this was a great idea and immediately got to work.

The oldest monkey was the first to hang upside down from a branch, and the other monkeys grabbed the legs or tails of the monkeys in front of them, forming a long “monkey chain” that slowly descended toward the well.

Finally, the youngest monkey reached the water. It excitedly said, “I touched the moon!”

But when it put its hand in the water, the surface was disturbed, and the moon in the well shattered into many small pieces.

The little monkey cried out in fear, “Oh no! I broke the moon!”

The old monkey heard this and was very anxious. He scolded, “How could you be so careless? You can’t even do something so simple!”

But soon, the water in the well slowly calmed down, and the moon reappeared intact.

The little monkey tried to reach out and grab it again, but only splashed a small drop of water.

The monkeys were exhausted

As time passed, the monkeys were all exhausted. Some monkeys’ arms were so sore they couldn’t move, and some couldn’t stand the pain in their tails. They complained,

“My hands hurt so much, I really can’t hold on any longer!”

“I’m about to give up too. Someone take my place!”

Just then, the old monkey looked up at the sky and suddenly noticed something important: the moon was still hanging there in the sky, it hadn’t fallen at all!

The old monkey quickly said to everyone, “Children, stop what you’re doing! The moon is still in the sky! What we saw in the well was just its reflection!”

Hearing this, the monkeys quickly climbed down from the trees and looked up at the sky. Sure enough, the moon was shining quietly on the earth.

They finally realized that they had been working hard for nothing, and they all laughed.

What does this story teach us?

Although the monkeys were unable to actually pull the moon out of the well, this story still provides us with many insights.

First, the monkeys were willing to work together to solve the problem, and this team spirit is worth learning from.

Second, this story reminds us that what we see with our eyes is not necessarily true. Sometimes we need to observe and think more to understand the truth.

Just like the moon in the well, it is actually only a reflection of the moon. If we don’t look carefully, it’s easy to make the wrong judgment.

Conclusion

“The Monkeys and the Moon” is a story full of childlike fun and wisdom. It is not only suitable for children to listen to, but can also provide some inspiration for adults in their daily lives.
