The Grimm’s Fairy Tale of Snow White: Kindness vs. Jealousy

Today, we are going to tell a very classic story – Snow White. This story comes from a collection of fairy tales created by the German Brothers Grimm. It tells how a beautiful, kind-hearted girl survives the persecution of evil forces and eventually achieves happiness. Through this story, we can not only feel the charm of fairy tales, but also learn some important life lessons.

Chapter 1: The Birth of Snow White

A long time ago, in a faraway kingdom, a queen gave birth to a lovely daughter. Her skin was as white as snow, her cheeks as rosy as apples, and her hair as black and shiny as ebony. People called her “Snow White” because of her beauty. However, Snow White’s mother died when she was very young, and the king married a new queen in order to give his daughter a full family.

The new queen was beautiful on the outside, but jealous on the inside. She had a magical magic mirror which answered her questions. Every time she stood in front of the mirror, she would ask, “Magic mirror, magic mirror, please tell me, who is the most beautiful woman in the world?” And the mirror always answered, “Queen, you are the most beautiful woman in the world.” Hearing such an answer, the queen always smiled with satisfaction.

Chapter 2: The Seed of Jealousy Sprouts

As time went by, Snow White grew up and became more and more beautiful. One day, the queen asked the magic mirror the same question again, but this time the mirror’s answer surprised her: “Queen, you may be beautiful, but Snow White is a thousand times more beautiful than you!”

This statement made the queen furious, and she couldn’t stand the idea of someone being more beautiful than she was. So she decided to get rid of Snow White. She ordered a hunter to take Snow White deep into the forest and demanded that he kill her and must also bring back her lungs and liver as evidence.

The hunter took Snow White into the forest, but he could not bear to hurt this innocent child. He said to Snow White, “Run, child! Run as far away as you can!” Then he killed a little boar, took out its entrails, and brought them back to the palace to be delivered.

Chapter 3: Home of the Seven Dwarfs

Poor Snow White was left alone in the forest, she was so scared that she kept running and running until it was dark. At that time, she found a small house, and gathered courage to knock on the door. When no one answered, she pushed open the door and went inside.

Everything in the house was small, but very neat. The table was covered with a white cloth, and there were seven small plates, each containing bread and other food; beside them were seven glasses filled with wine, and seven knives and forks. Against the wall were placed side by side seven little beds.

The hungry and tired Snow White ate and drank some wine, and then lay down on one of the cots and fell asleep.

At night the masters of the house came back. They were seven dwarfs who had been digging for gold in the mountains. They were a little surprised at first to see a stranger in the house, but when they realized that it was Snow White lying on the bed, they were immediately struck by her beauty. “My, what a lovely child this is!” They whispered, without waking her.

The next morning, Snow White woke up and told the dwarfs what had happened. The dwarfs listened and sympathized with her, and said to her, “If you would like to help us with housekeeping and chores, you can stay here, and you are welcome.”

Snow White happily agreed and has lived in the dwarfs’ home ever since.

Chapter 4: The Queen’s Plot

Meanwhile, the Queen, thinking that Snow White was dead, once again came to the Magic Mirror and asked, “Magic Mirror, Magic Mirror, please tell me, who is the most beautiful woman in the world?”

The mirror replied, “Queen, although you are the prettiest woman here, Snow White in the house of the seven dwarfs is a thousand times prettier than you.”

The queen was dumbfounded and furious at this. She realized that the hunter had deceived her and decided to take matters into her own hands. She disguised herself as an old woman selling goods and went to the dwarfs’ house.

The old woman knocked on the door and shouted, “Pretty things for sale! What pretty ribbons!” Snow White opened the door and bought a roll of colorful ribbon. The old woman took the opportunity to say, “Let me tie it for you!” As a result, she tightened the ribbon around Snow White’s neck, causing her to choke and fall to the ground.

At night, the dwarfs returned home and found Snow White unconscious. They cut the ribbon and woke her up. After hearing what happened, they warned Snow White, “That old woman must be a bad queen in disguise; never let anyone in again!”

Chapter 5: The Poisoned Comb and the Poisoned Apple

Nonetheless, the Queen was still not happy. She returned to the palace, made a poisoned comb with witchcraft, and once again disguised herself as another granny and came to the dwarfs’ house.

This time, she pretended to sell her wares to attract Snow White’s attention. She held up the comb seductively and said, “Look how beautiful this comb is, I’ll give you a few strokes to try it out.” The simple and kind Snow White agreed. However, as soon as the comb touched her hair, the poison immediately kicked in and she fell to the ground unconscious once again.

At night, the dwarfs returned home, found the poisoned comb, and quickly pulled it out, saving Snow White. Once again, they reminded her to beware of strangers.

However, the queen did not give up. She returned to the palace and used her magic to create a poisoned apple. This time, she applied the poison to the red side of the apple, while the white side was non-poisonous. Dressed as a peasant woman, she took the poisoned apple to the dwarf’s house.

“Little girl, I give you an apple.” The queen said.

“No, the dwarfs won’t let me accept anything from anyone.” Snow White refused.

“Then are you afraid it’s poisonous? I’ll cut it in half and give you the red half and I’ll eat the white half, that’s fine!” The queen said slyly.

Snow White watched the peasant woman eat the white half and felt safe, so she took the red half and bit into it. However, the poison took effect instantly and she fell to the ground as if dead.

Chapter 6: The Prince’s Arrival and Happy Ending

The dwarfs returned home and found Snow White lying on the ground, unable to wake her up. Grief-stricken, they laid her in a glass coffin and guarded her.

One day, a handsome prince passed by the forest and saw the sleeping Snow White. Fascinated by her beauty, he asked the dwarfs to allow him to take the coffin. While carrying it, the coffin accidentally hit a stone, and pieces of the poisoned apple stuck in Snow White’s throat were shaken out. A miracle happens and Snow White awakens!

The prince expresses his love to Snow White and the two return to the prince’s castle together and live happily ever after.

As for the evil queen, her jealousy eventually led to her destruction. It is said that she died of shame and remorse at a banquet, paying the price for her actions.
